What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

Kayla - Sonhe Collective on 18th Jul 2025

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is a rare but serious neurological condition caused by the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles. After someone recovers from chickenpox, the virus can stay dormant in the body and reactivate years later, affecting the facial nerves near one of the ears.

Common Symptoms Include:

Facial paralysis on one side (often mistaken for a stroke)

Painful rash in or around the ear, mouth, or on the face

Hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Vertigo or balance issues

Difficulty speaking or eating

Loss of taste on part of the tongue

Dry eyes and mouth

The symptoms can range from mild to severe, and unfortunately, some people never fully recover facial movement or sensation—especially if treatment isn’t started quickly.

What Causes It?

The main trigger is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, but it's often linked to periods of extreme stress or a weakened immune system. For many, including myself, stress was the silent force that pushed my body to the edge.

Is It Treatable?

Yes—early diagnosis is key. Antiviral medications and corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation and viral spread, especially if taken within 72 hours of the first symptoms. Physical therapy, facial exercises, and relaxation techniques can also support long-term recovery.

However, recovery is different for everyone. Some may regain full function, while others, like myself, live with permanent facial paralysis.

Living with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

Living with RHS is physically and emotionally challenging. It can affect how you see yourself, how you connect with others, and how you move through the world. But it also teaches you resilience, patience, and the power of slowing down.

For me, learning how to relax and create a calm environment became part of my healing. Candles, with their gentle scent and soft glow, played a quiet but powerful role in helping me rebuild. They gave me moments of peace on the hardest days.
