How Candles Helped Me Heal: My Ramsay's Hunt Battle

Kayla- Sonhe Collective on 18th Jul 2025

In 2016, my life changed forever.

I was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that left the entire left side of my face completely paralyzed. Overnight, simple tasks like smiling, talking, or even eating became immense challenges. I was in my late 20s—an age where most people are chasing dreams, careers, or travel plans—and suddenly, I was re-learning the basics of everyday life.

The cause? Stress.

Stress can manifest in unimaginable ways, and for me, it brought my world to a halt. What followed was one of the most difficult seasons of my life—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

But something beautiful grew out of that darkness.

 Finding Calm in Chaos

In the early days of recovery, I discovered something unexpected: candles.

It might seem small, but the flicker of a flame and the comfort of a calming scent became my daily ritual. Lighting a candle became a moment of peace in the storm—a reminder to breathe, to slow down, and to focus on healing.

The gentle glow, the warmth, and the soothing fragrance grounded me. It brought me back to myself on the days when I felt completely lost. When I couldn’t smile or speak properly, candles still made me feel whole.

 From Healing to Dreaming

As I slowly rebuilt my strength, I began to dream again. What if I could share that same comfort with others? What if I could create something beautiful from something so painful?

That dream became Sonhe Collective—"Sonhe" meaning dream in Portuguese.

Every candle I create is a part of that healing journey. They’re not just products; they’re tools for relaxation, rituals of self-care, and gentle reminders to pause. Whether you're lighting one during a stressful day or unwinding after a long week, I hope it brings you the same comfort they gave me.

 A Note to You

If you’re going through a hard time, know this: you are not alone. Healing takes time, and peace often comes in the smallest, quietest moments. Light a candle. Take a deep breath. Give yourself grace.

From my heart to your home.
